Paul lines about “Who I Talk To When You Are Not Here”

From the end of 2023 until the beginning of 2024, I was an artist-in-residence at the Alice Boner Institute in Varanasi, India. While there, I immersed myself in this ancient, bustling city’s colors, sounds, smells, and sights.  I made ten paintings and over 20 drawings during the residency, which were shown in a solo exhibition.   The exhibition also had two “installation” pieces dealing with my discovery of Nada Yoga – the yoga of sound.   While in India, I acquired a massive 40cm singing bowl, which I used during my meditation.  Over time, I began to hear the rich resonances the bowl offered – along with a significant decay time.   I recorded the singing bowl and began weaving it with other sounds I had heard in Varanasi.

Despite being in one of the busiest, noisiest, and most densely populated cities I have ever experienced, I often felt very alone.   I was alone with my work, alone in my meditation practice, and alone in my thoughts.  I discovered that, in many ways, I had many internal conversations.  I spoke with the art I was making.  I spoke to the experiences I was having.   I talked about the immersive experiences I had every day.  I was often reminded of the famous quote of John Cage: “When you start working, everybody is in your studio—the past, your friends, enemies, the art world, and above all, your ideas—all are there. But as you continue painting, they start leaving, one by one, and you are left entirely alone. Then, if you’re lucky, even you leave.

“who i talk to when you are not here” is a sound installation and long-form meditation work.  The resulting work of which you hear on this disc.
