About “The Ceremony” (by djamtomorrow)

Towards the end of 2024 I was invited to play mbira in a village some way out of Harare as part of a ceremony, known as Kurova Guva, that guides the spirit of a person back to the village through music, song and dance a while after their death.

The experience of the night inspired me to evoke the juxtaposing drums, mbira, song, shouts, talk and noise of the occasion using an mbira itself as the sole sound source. No other instrument is used in this piece. It is part of a wider project to reveal the sounds within the Zimbabwean mbira.
